Transforming movement into meaningful learning

GROSS MOTOR HANDBOOK

What is NeurOT?

NeurOT is a practical activity booklet created by Galway based pediatric Occupational Therapist Natalie Halloran and neuroscience researcher Thea Mannix. It shows parents and educators how to use everyday movement and simple equipment (e.g. peanut ball, wobble cushion, electrical tape) to support focus, regulation, and participation in learning. The activities are most suitable for children aged 3-8 years, and are designed to help those providing education easily adapt to their learners need, level, and curriculum stage.

WHO IS IT FOR?

  • Teachers (especially those in preschool, Junior Infants–2nd Class) and SET/SEN teams

  • Parents/caregivers looking for easy, effective ideas for supporting learning at home

  • School-based therapists (OT/SLT) seeking classroom-ready activities

WHY IT WORKS AND WHAT'S INSIDE

  • NeurOT uses movement to support the brain in learning while building sensory processing, postural control, visual skills, and bilateral coordination, which are the foundations for reading, writing, and maths.

  • The booklet is adaptable and child-led, and it is organised by Mathematics, Language, and Physical Education.

  • Each activity is explained in easy-to-understand language, along with their benefits and extra tips.

  • You will also find adaptations for different ages and abilities, and a plain-language glossary.
